I used to be a Wall Street executive running on Ego 100% of the time. I've seen the Ego destroy thousands of people from executives, artists, entertainers, politicians, the list goes on and on. At first, I tried to eliminate it altogether, then I realized I simply needed to train it to benefit my true authentic self and my greater good.
So how do we master the beast that craves attention and the spotlight? I think of the Ego as a Tiger that is always hungry and never full. If I let it take over and rule my life, it becomes a overworked distracted tyrant. If I keep it caged, like a Tiger in captivity should be, I can open the door when it needs to be unleashed and use it for my/our greater good. If it is kept a little starved, it will work hard for us, when my higher self says it needs to.
The best way to explain what I mean is to show some examples: think of an athlete, like a Serena Williams. She practices daily, exercises her body, eats healthfully, and is aware that she has her Ego in a cage...until...she has a match. Then, just before the match she willfully lets her Ego (the Tiger) out of the cage, knowing it's hungry. Her preparation plus this added dose of Ego-energy is exactly where the Ego shines. When the Ego goes in for the kill (the win) he becomes satiated and full, then he can go back into his cage where he will rest, and not be allowed to be destructive. He will then be summoned to come out again when she needs him.
Another example would be entertainers, we have all seen them destruct so many times, from using drugs (Amy Winehouse) to exhaustion (Kanye West). Like the athlete, they practice their craft, nurture their voice, write magical music, etc. If they can tap into their true authentic self and be actively aware that they have chosen to keep their Ego in confinement where it can't take over their lives on a daily basis, they will begin the mastery. On performance night just before a concert, they knowingly open the door to the cage, knowing it's rested and ready. Now because the Ego shines in the spotlight and loves applause it will make the performance a smash hit by feeding the crowd as they feed it, then back into the cage it goes for rest where it can't be destructive, and where it will be eagerly awaiting to be summoned for the next performance.
Awards shows (or awards of any kind) are another great example of where the Ego shines. It so loves to be in the spotlight and to be given accolades, so let it! The mindfulness of allowing it to bask at these events is being aware that you are giving it permission to. People will get into trouble when they are not aware that it's simply the Ego enjoying what it loves to do. After the award, our true authentic self must firmly direct it back into it's cage where it can rest and do no harm, where it will wait for direction from our higher self. This is mastering the Ego.
How I see this scenario play out in most of us is by living daily in our true authentic self , but when we need to reach for the stars of success (if that is what is wanted) we go to our Ego, the fighter and predator, waiting in the wings willfully ready to make it happen.
If we practice this exercise daily with self-awareness, we will become the Master of our Ego. Then we can be in harmony with it, instead of fighting over who is boss.
