We all have thoughts that can sometimes border on becoming obsessive. When we take a small little thing that we said, heard or did and (in our minds) we create an elephant of a situation that simply isn't reality. How do we curtail this unhealthy pattern before it gets out of control?
The next time we re-play a story that is on the verge of becoming an obsessive loop in our heads, simply:
1. Be aware that we obsessing about something.
For example: I would say to myself, "I can't get that awful story from the news out of my head". Then I would say, "I'm aware I can't stop thinking about it and it's becoming an obsessive thought".
2. Being aware and mindful of what's happening will instantly take the edge off of the anxiety, because now we can separate ourselves from the story.
3. Then say, "I know re-playing the story isn't healthy for me and I'm not going to let my mind take over control for what is best for the health of my body."
The anxiety should begin to diminish, and the heaviness will start to lift away. Being aware that our mind will often try to take control of our body is important in maintaining good mind/body/spirit health.
