Our brain is complex. I'm not a scientist, but I'm going to try to explain something that I work on with my therapist quite a bit. The animal part of our brain is our oldest and most developed because as cave men and women we would have to be on alert when predators were close by in order to take cover, fight or flee. Let's face it, our logical brain wasn't used much in the cave days. Can you see us trying to reason with a lion or bear wanting to eat us for dinner?
Didn't think so.
1) Today, our animal brain is still overactive in many of us. It's where our panic attacks come from or PTSD is activated. When we know that it's our animal brain that is taking over our bodies, well that is a huge step. As we start to sweat, get nervous, legs tremble, etc. we can bring awareness to it and say, "dammit animal brain, there you go again".
2) Now that awareness is our logical brain (yay!). Then we can change the dialogue and say "I've just activated my logical brain" or as I call it my Spock brain (as in Star Trek, all logic and not emotional). Now it's really important to notice when our animal brain gets ahead of us, because if our logical brain doesn't notice it right away, we can go down the rabbit hole quickly and end up a real mess.
3) The more often our logical brain notices our animal brain, the better we get at it.
At this point we are way ahead of the pack, because so many people don't get this far.
Now for step #4. Begin to see it in others, go ahead and analyze them just a little. When you see someone acting like a jerk, or fighting with someone, ask your logical brain to recognize the animal in someone else. By seeing it in others, we will see it in ourselves even more.
5) Ask our logical brain to have a conversation with our animal brain when it gets overloaded, like "I know we are trembling from our panic attack, but look around, there is nothing to be afraid of, it's made-up fear from our cave days. No lion or bear or bomb around". Then stay in logic.
Just bringing our awareness to this part of ourselves is huge!
